Facebook Fan Page Notifications & Other New Features

by Kimberly Yow on February 25, 2011

Facebook recently upgraded Business Fan Pages which now provide admins with several new features.  As an admin, you can:

Receive fan page email notifications:

  • Receive an email when a fan posts on your fan page wall.  This was a much requested feature and a long time coming!
  • This feature can be turned off per admin (go to Your Settings).  You may want to do this if your company’s business fan page has multiple admins and all of them do Not need to get the email notifications.

Comment as your fan page:

  • If you are like many people, you’ve probably wanted to leave a comment on other fan pages and have it display your business fan page name vs. your name as an individual. You can now do this!  (Click “Use Facebook as Page” under your Account Menu.)

This screen shot from Facebook, mentions the above plus a couple of other features:

New Facebook Fan Page Features

Change your fan page category:

  • Take a look at the new categories & sub-categories and adjust your fan page category if desired.  (Edit your Basic Information to do this.)

Change fan page name:

  • Facebook slipped this feature in a while ago.  If your fan page has less than 100 fans, you can change the name of your fan page.  (This does not affect your fan page vanity url if you have one.)
  • A client of mine had 106 fans but wanted to change his fan page name to incorporate a new part of his business.  We deleted a few fans until he was down to 99.  Then we changed his fan page name.  After the name change, he sent the people he deleted a personal message explaining what we did and he asked them to “like” his fan page again.  (Of course they did because we only deleted family members or very close friends!)

Benefits of new vertical fan page navigation:

  • If you haven’t already upgraded your fan page, it will be automatically upgraded by Facebook in early March.  Once upgraded, your fan page navigation will be in the left column instead of across the top of your fan page.  In general, I don’t like the new layout however I did discover a couple of benefits…
  • Benefit #1:  The vertical navigation menu, in the left column, allows you to display “6″ page links in addition to default links for Wall & Info.  (Horizontal navigation only allowed “4″ extra links to display at any one time.)
  • Benefit #2:  Vertical navigation links can include more characters than horizontal navigation.

If you have any questions, please post them below.  Also, if you’ve upgraded your fan page, what’s your opinion of the recent changes?  Do you like them?  Will they help you as an admin?

Kimberly

We just created a Facebook page for our church, and when logging in as admin there I cannot locate a workable option for posting a status update. I can see the options for posting to the wall, adding an event, etc. at the top of the wall if I’m logging in to the page as a fan, but cannot see these options when I am logged in as admin. Any suggestions on where to start?

Thanks for your help,
Sandy

Hi Sandy – Fans do not “log in” to a business page and they also cannot “add events” to a business page. If you are seeing the ability to “add an event”, you are logged in as an admin (they are the only ones that can add events).

Since the church page is new, you may be automatically landing on a “Get Started” page when you access the church fan page. If so, click on the Wall tab/link and you should see options for posting a status update, link, video, etc…

How do I add page links to the vertical navigation on the fan page? Thank you for your help.

Hi Erica – You need to add apps (applications) if you want them to display in the navigation. Assuming you’ve already upgraded your page and see some links in the vertical navigation, go to “Edit Page”, then click “Apps” in the left hand column. For each app that you have on the Apps page, click “Edit Settings” to see what it says for the Tab Setting. If it says “Available”, click the Add link next to the word Available. This will add the link (previously called Tab) to your vertical navigation. Hope that helps! – Kimberly

Hi Kimberly, We just created a Facebook fan page for our Preschool/Day Care. Our clients have signed permission forms to allow us to post pictures of their kids in daily activites. Some have signed opt out forms, which is fine. Is there a way for me to screen fans so that I can block out anyone who is not a parent or family member of the kids enrolled? (Like accepting or not accepting fans like I can for friends on my personal page.) This would make those who opted out feel saf enough to give permission. Thanks!

Angela – You can’t “pre-screen” fans and accept/decline them like you can with “friends”. You can see who is a fan of the page once they’ve become a fan and you can delete them if necessary. I think a better option for the preschool would be to set up a “group”…and make it a “closed” group…so you can control who is a member and who sees the content. – Kimberly
