Facebook just revamped Facebook Groups with new features and functionality. Members of a “new” group can:
- share (status updates, photos, videos, links, documents & events)
- participate in a group “chat”
- send/receive email using the “group email address” if one is set up by the group admin
How To Create a New Facebook Group
To create a New Group, access the following page (see screen shot) at http://facebook.com/groups:
New Group Highlights
- admins can “add” their friends to a group
- friends that have been added to a group do NOT need to confirm group membership…they are added automatically
- a member of a group can leave the group any time they wish – (go to the group page and click “leave group” in the right hand column of your screen)
- a group member can & should visit the “edit notifications” link in the right hand column of the group page
- admins can remove or ban people from a group
- there can be multiple group admins
- the group creator cannot be removed by another admin (Facebook should add this functionality to business fan pages too!!)
- there are 3 types of privacy settings for the new groups: open, closed & secret
Those are just the highlights off the top of my head. You can find additional info at the following links:

Can The New Facebook Groups Be Used For Business?
My head is spinning with ideas! From a business standpoint, I think the “new” group features will be great for:
- tribe syndication groups
- freelance collaborators
- co-workers
- networking or mastermind groups
- groups from membership sites
Let me know what you think…

Hi Kimberly,
Two months ago I created a group and those new features weren’t available yet and I’d like to have them in my group. Is there any way to do that?
Thanks.
Hi Cesar – No, according to Facebook, at this time you cannot convert an old group into a new group or add the new group features to an old/existing group. Depending on the size and purpose of your old group, you may want to start a new group so you can take advantage of the new features and encourage old group members to join the new group. – Kimberly
