To have a Facebook Fan Page you must have either a Personal Account or a Business Account. Many people don’t realize that there is such a thing as a Business Account or how it is different from a Personal Account. See Facebook Account Types: Which Account Is Right For You? for an explanation.
To Set Up a Business Account & Create a Fan Page:
Important Note: I only recommend this for businesses that are NOT sole proprietorships OR for sole proprietors that do Not want to have friends and a Personal Account on Facebook.
Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and enter the basic info to Create An Official Page.
After you click the “Create Official Page” button you’ll be taken to a second data entry screen. Be sure to select “I do not have a Facebook account” (this will create a Business Account for you) and then enter the rest of the required info.
While logged into a Business Account, you are limited in which applications and functionality you can add to your page as well as what type of changes you can make to it. To get around this, make someone with a Personal Account an administrator of the fan page and have them make the changes.
If you have set up a Business Account for a company that is not a sole proprietorship and you have your own Personal Account:
- Make yourself an admin of the Business Account Fan Page.
- Log out of the Business Account.
- Log into your Personal Account.
- As an administrator, logged into a Personal Account, you will be able to do anything you want to the company Fan Page.
- Someone from the company will need to log in to the Business Account and remove administrators as needed. This would be necessary if an employee that was an administrator leaves the company or when a contractor (that was an administrator) stops working with your company. Make sure there is always at least one administrator!
WARNING: To make sure you don’t lose access to your Fan Page, be mindful of who you give Fan Page administrative rights to. At the time of this writing, any Fan Page administrator can delete the other Fan Page administrator(s).

have you tried doing this today? i have been with a client and went through the stages, set up page, no fb acc, enter email, pw, dob… verify email… land on page with the only options to create adverts, create profile, settings again for personal acc, log out and case studies… no ref to recently set up page…
had a search though fb hlp and the relevant pages where presenting errors, now they point to facebook advertising which allows you to create an advert, profile but there seems no way to administer your new bus account or page – am i missing something?
Hi Toni – No, I haven’t done the above today but I’ve done it numerous times for clients. I did have trouble logging in to Facebook today…took several tries so I think they’re a little buggy today. I sent you an email with my contact info. If you want to touch base, I’ll try to help if you are still having trouble. – Kimberly
thanks, will do!
It appears that FB has removed the business account option within the last few weeks. Can’t create a company page without a profile anymore.
I tested this feature on 9/22/10 and it worked fine. See screen shots above which I just added to the blog post. – Kimberly
I just tried and had the same problem as toni. It let me setup without using a personal profile but when I clicked the confirmation link it sent me to the advertising page. When I went back another time it told me I had to fill out a personal account.
Hi Don – Toni’s problem wasn’t really a problem so if you are experiencing the same thing she described, you need to do the following: log back into the business account, on the advertising page (in the left hand column) you may see a link that says Pages or somewhere on the ad page you’ll see a link that is the name of the fan page you just created. Click whichever link you see. If you don’t see either link, click any link that seems to have something to do with Pages. That’s all Toni did, and when she clicked the right link, she was on her new fan page.
Hi,
I have seen that some fan pages like Ferrari, harley-davidson… don’t have advertisments.
Do you know how can I get it in my own page?
Regards
I’m assuming that Ferrari, Harley-Davidson and other BIG companies (that possibly advertise with Facebook) don’t have the same set of rules as the rest of us.
Thanks for your tips Kimberly. We had to hunt to find this info the first time we set up our business Facebook page a couple years ago despite being a web company. It’s nice to have this info all in one place for all of us! Too bad Facebook doesn’t make it easier for everyone to get this info
Keep up the great blogging!
Thanks for the kind words Charley! – Kimberly
Hi. I set up a business fan page for the company I work for. I was prompted to set up a profile page numerous times, so I did for the business. Now I am wanting to delete the profile page. Do you know of a way to do this? It seems like a lot of people are wanting to do this so hopefully FB has a way.
Thank you for your help!
Maria
Hi Maria – If you were logged into an existing Facebook Business Account…and you clicked “Create Your Profile” in the upper right hand corner of the Facebook screen…you are out of luck. Clicking on that link, and following the subsequent prompts, automatically CONVERTED your business account into a personal account. Unfortunately, there is no way to undo this action! – Kimberly

Do I follow the above step when I already have a personal profile account?
Hi Jasman – Perhaps you might find this post useful: http://www.howtousefacebookforbusiness.com/2010/07/facebook-business-account-versus-personal-account/.
If you have a personal account and you simply want to create a business page for YOUR business, go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. If you want to create a business page for a company that you work for, it would be best for the company to have their own Facebook account.
