Which Type of Facebook Account Is Right For You?
Most people don’t realize it but Facebook offers two types of accounts, a Business Account and a Personal Account. Below I describe the capabilities of each type of account.
Business Account vs. Personal Account:
Business Account: A business account is meant for a company that is not a sole-proprietorship OR a sole-proprietorship whose owner does NOT want to use Facebook to interact with friends. If you set-up a business account you will not be allowed to set-up a personal account. A business account enables you to create paid advertisements on Facebook and Fan Pages for your business and that’s about it! I highly recommend a Business Account for any organization or company that is not a sole proprietorship.
Personal Account: A Personal Account enables you to maintain a personal profile, interact with friends, create and/or join groups, create a Fan Page for your business, become a fan of (or Like) other fan pages AND purchase advertising. It also allows you to make changes to a Business Account Fan Page IF you are an administrator of the page. A personal account is more versatile which is why I recommend it to just about all sole proprietors.
Beware, Facebook Account Policies:
Facebook technically only allows you to have one account, either a Business Account or a Personal Account. If you create a personal account, it is supposed to be in your real name (first and last names) although I have seen personal accounts that were set-up using a business name or under the name of a beloved pet. Facebook has been known to delete or deactivate accounts without warning if they are in violation of this policy.
So, which account is right for you and your business? A Personal Account or a Business Account?
If you answered Business Account, go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php to create your Facebook Account and set up your first Fan Page for your business. If you prefer a Personal Account, simply go to http://www.facebook.com/ and enter the requested info to create your Account.

Is your Fan Page at http://www.facebook.com/SocialNetworking4Biz a Personal Account or Business Account?
Hi Andre – Just to clarify, a fan page is not an account. In order to create a fan page, you must have either a business account or a personal account. I have a personal account and http://www.facebook.com/SocialNetworking4Biz is one of the fan pages that I created while I was logged into my personal account. My personal account also allows me to have a Profile which is where I interact with family and friends on a personal level.
How would I create a Facebook fan page without having it linked to a personal profile? I want to have a page, but without having to manage it through a personal one. I have tried to create it but it always wants me to enter in personal information; would it still do that if, when it gets to the page where it asks for my name, I put in the company name? I have searched all over to try to figure this out; if you have any suggestions they would be appreciated!

Thanks! I have been meaning to try and figure this out for some time now and your post explains it all in just a few words thanks!
