The new tagging feature recently announced by Facebook looks pretty awesome! Here are a few things I learned by using it.
Does the new Facebook tagging feature work from a Fan Page or a Group?
It works from personal profiles AND fan pages. It does not appear to work from a group at this time.
How does it work?
You simply type the @ symbol in your status update and then select the item you want to tag from a drop-down menu that will appear. It’s fast & easy! You can tag friends, events, groups, fan pages, etc…
What happens if someone tags my Fan Page?:
If someone tags your fan page from their personal profile, a post will be created on your fan page wall that’s identical to what the person posted. You’ll also see a link that says “view post”. Clicking the link will take you to that person’s original post and you’ll be able to see any additional comments that were attached by other Facebook users. (The same scenario happens if someone tags your personal profile.)
How can I use this new tagging feature from a business stand-point?
A couple of ideas: 1) If you practice the “givers gain” attitude of helping others, use the tagging feature to tag your friend’s fan pages, groups or events. 2) A couple of times a month, post an invitation from your personal profile for readers to join your fan page (or group) and be sure to “tag” your fan page/group so they have easy access to it. 3) Tag your own events.
So what do you think of the new Facebook tagging feature? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks!

You mention that the tagging feature works from a Fan Page, but as administrator of a Fan Page I have found I cannot tag my page’s fans in a status update unless I am friends with that fan on my personal/individual Facebook page. Can you verify this and do you know if Facebook has plans to change that?
Hi Lindsey – You cannot tag Fans at this time. I’m sorry but I do not know if Facebook has plans for adding this feature. If they do add it, I will certainly write a blog post about it. Thanks for your question. – Kimberly
I have tried to tag a client’s fan page in a status I posted to my company’s fan page, and it works in my status, but does not show up on their wall. Are there privacy settings they may have selected that keep tags from showing up on their wall? (And yes, I am already a fan of their page.)
Hi Debra – I don’t know of any settings that control tagging unless there is something relatively new. But there is a setting that controls whether or not a fan can post on a fan page wall.
Does the fan page that you tagged, have their wall posts & posts by fans all integrated onto the same wall? Some fan pages don’t and if they don’t, the posts by fans show up in a separate place. Look above the wall posts…just before the Wall/Info/Photos tabs. Do you see a link with the fan page name and another that says “Just Fans”? If so, click “Just Fans” and see if your tag is visible. Let me know the outcome. – Kimberly
Debra – I just noticed in my home page news feed that someone had tagged my fan page. It was not posted on my fan page wall. It didn’t work for me when I tagged a fan page from my own page. And I followed a tag from a random fan page and that tag didn’t show up on the tagged fan page either. No, we aren’t crazy. Fan pages used to see who had tagged them on the fan page wall. I don’t know if this is a permanent Facebook change or just a fluke.
Hi Kim
I have the exact same problem !!!! Your right!! …. the tag does NOT appear on the fan page, not even in the Just Fans. This sucks BIG time. let me know if you found the solution to this, maybe its just a setting?

I’m noticing the same thing. Tagged fan page posts don’t show up on the corresponding fan page any longer.
Hi,
I just want to add and I don’t think I’m seeing when fans tag my fan page, either. It would be so useful to know when that happened, if indeed it ever did.
Thanks!
I just had a fan of my page tag to my fan page. So I think this is working now!
Great! Thanks Jessica!
The tagging feature would be way more useful on fan pages to tag fans. But it seems FB has some issues with fan pages and how they are administered.
Also the title of this post is FAcebook for Business. A little misleading considering tagging only works on friends, not fans. Just my 3 cents worth.
Hi George – I totally agree that it would be very useful to be able to tag a fan. Hopefully Facebook will add that feature some day!
I believe that tagging is good for fan page owners. If you have friends, family or fans that tag your fan page from their personal profile…it gives your fan page more exposure by making it visible to that person’s friends. I regularly promote my friend’s content or fan page and they reciprocate when they see a post of mine that they like. It’s a great way to help each other.

has anyone been successful on seeing tagged fan pages posts on the fan page wall? when i try to tag a fan page in my status it doesnt show up on the fan page wall. has anyone found a work around? all the page setting allow people to post directly to the wall so i know it’s not a setting issue.
Your question: “has anyone been successful on seeing tagged fan pages posts on the fan page wall?”
Answer: Yes. On August 6th, my fan page was tagged from another fan page and I only knew that it happened because the tagged message appeared on my fan page wall. I have also seen the tagging feature work in the past. HOWEVER, I have also seen it not work…it appears to be sporadic…and a Facebook issue.
Hi, great article, quick question.
Is there a way to received email notifications when somebody posts on your wall of a page/group that you administer? I did not create the page but have admin rights, and a competitor just wrote on our wall and essentially advertized there product for a few hours while I didnt know it was there.
Had I gotten an email notification about the new post it would have been deleted immediately.
Is there any way to monitor wall posts without having to constantly monitor FB??
Thank you in advance for the response, this is critical to our fledgeling business and FB movement.
Best,
Ben
At this time, Facebook does not have a feature for notifying fan page administrators when a new status update is posted to the fan page wall. “Most of the time” you will be notified when someone comments on a status update if you previously “liked” that specific status update however this “trick” doesn’t always work.
For now, you have to regularly monitor fan pages that you administer.
It is important to note that fan pages are fully visible to the public and indexable by search engines. As such, Fan page tags only appear on a fan page wall if a user has opted to have their profile status updates viewable by “everyone”.
If your status updates / wall posts are set in your Privacy Settings as being only visible by “Friends” or “Friends of Friends”, then your tagged status will NOT post to the fan page wall, because those wall posts are for “Everyone.”
So, there are 2 solutions here:
(1) Change the overall Privacy Settings of your Wall Posts to “Everyone”
(2) Change the security setting for that particular post. (This is done by clicking on the little padlock symbol underneath wall post box).
Hope this helps…
Thanks for the tip Andrea!
To anyone reading this comment from Andrea: I have not tested Andrea’s recommended solutions because my privacy settings have always been set to “everyone”. I suggest you try her 2nd solution…changing the setting for a specific status update…and see what happens. – Kimberly
Kimberly,
I’ve encountered Debra’s and Aubrey’s problem with tagging. I tagged my place of work in a personal post, but it didn’t appear on my place of work’s Wall. But when I tag other business’, they appear on their Wall’s respectively.
I’ve reviewed all my settings. It feels like I’m missing something.
I have tried to tag photos on my profile to fan and business pages, but often a link fails to form. That is frustrating when you want spread the word about something you like that would benefit from the exposure.
I don’t get it.
